Weather Stations and Biodiversity Observatories
Since 2015 and under the SASSCAL WeatherNet program, four weather stations were instrumented within the core study area, and a further three fall within the 50km buffer area. Within the study area the Espinheira station has been operational since 2015, the Iona Coastal and Marienflusstal have both been decommissioned in 2017, thus currently in the core study area there are two operational stations (Espinheira and Okangwati).
The SASSCAL ObservationNet offers data and information regarding temporal changes within ecosystems. The data are collected by a variety of different scientific disciplines jointly using standardised research infrastructure for long-term observation, called Biodiversity Observatories.
There are four SASSCAL Observatories within the SCIONA study area:
- Angola, Iona National Park: Espinheira, with a link to online weather data
- Namibia, northern Kunene region: Hartmann Plains
- Namibia, northern Kunene region: Featherlion
- Namibia, northern Kunene region: Marienfluss Valley
